SALEM, JAN. 25 . A crash course for the watchmen of the co-operative banks, on how to pursue safety measures in the banks while on duty, was held here today. Inaugurating the one-day session, the Salem Rural Superintendent of Police (SP), Pon. Manickavel said that watchmen of the banks should be agile and alert. They must be aware of the legal provisions of Sections 100 and 101 of IPC that permit the security to resist any attempt of burglary. The watchmen could without fear retaliate and attack the illegal and forceful intruders. "Even the death of an intruder could not be construed as murder in such a circumstance," he added. The SP further urged the banks to install sound alarms with high decibels to attract public attention. Revolving red lights atop the buildings also could be installed to alert the police and public during crisis. Safe rooms should be painted often so that the police could easily pick up clear fingerprints whenever occurrences took place.
Night duty
He said that banks should appoint two watchmen for night duty on rotational basis. This, he added, would eliminate fatigue, which burglars exploited. The surveillance should be equally intense even in daytime. Surprise checks by officials concerned should be taken up and iron grills should be erected around the safe room area, he added. The Regional Joint Registrar, A. Sankaralingam, presided over the function in which the Salem District Central Co-operative Bank Special Officer, S. Mahalingam, the Co-operative Union Special Officer, Muthukrishnan, and the Deputy Registrars, Elangovan and Kulandaivelu, participated. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chandrasekaran, imparted the training. The Administrative Officer from The New India Insurance, Mohammed Naheep, spoke on insurance issues. Bank watchmen from Salem and Attur blocks participated.
