ERODE, JAN. 25 . A retired executive officer of a panchayat was today awarded one-year RI for demanding bribe. The case for prosecution was that on June 27, 2000, Chinnathambi of Kemmanaickkenpalayam, Sathyamangalam taluk approached Periyasamy, the then Executive Officer of the panchayat to change his grandson's name in the birth register and provide a certificate after the change.

When Periyasamy demanded Rs. 100 as bribe, Chinnathambi made a complaint to the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Wing. They laid a trap and arrested Periyasamy while he was receiving the amount from Chinnathambi. A case was registered against Periyasamy, who later retired from service. Examining the case, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, J. Jayaraman, awarded the sentence.
