SRINAGAR, JAN. 25. The commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, Nirbhay Sharma, has been awarded the Uttam Yuddh Seva Medal on the occasion of Republic Day for his exceptional service during the ongoing insurgency in the Kashmir Valley. Lt. Gen. Sharma, who has been heading the most sensitive Army Corps in the country for the past 18 months, has already been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal at various stages in his career. A defence spokesman said the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal was in recognition of Lt. Gen. Sharma's contribution to the return of normality in Kashmir. "His vision `Jawan Aur Awam, Aman Hai Muqam' bears testimony to his untiring efforts in bringing peace and prosperity in the valley," the spokesman said. An accomplished paratrooper, he is a graduate of the National Defence Academy. He was commissioned in the Army on December 1966. The General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps was specifically selected to raise and command a counter terrorism division to fight militancy in Kashmir. He has also commanded a battalion on the India-China border and a brigade along the Line of Control.
