Workshop on manuscripts

TUMKUR JAN. 25. Siddaganga College here and the National Mission for Manuscripts, Government of India, will conduct a workshop on preservation of manuscripts at the college seminar hall on Thursday from 10 a.m. N.P. Ravindranath, principal of the college, said in a press release that the workshop is open for librarians, lecturers and students. G.S.S. Rao from B.M. Sri. Pratishtan; P. Jayasimha and M.S. Satish from the Chitrakala Parishat; and Usha Suresh, Deputy Director of the Karnataka State Archives, will speak at the workshop. It will be followed by a demonstration of the ill effects of light and moisture on manuscripts. Interested persons may call 9845901973.

Forest guard killed

GADAG JAN. 25. M.D. Shirahatti, a forest guard, was killed by some persons, who escaped with sandalwood billets from the office of the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Gadag, on Monday night. The incident occurred at the forest office complex at Binkadakatte village on the Gadag-Hubli road. The miscreants reportedly gagged Shirahatti, who was on night duty, and escaped with the booty, the police said. Another guard on night duty was fast asleep in the adjoining room, it is said. The miscreants reportedly broke open the door to enter the office, where the sandalwood was stocked. The Superintendent of Police, Manish Karbekar, visited the spot. Fingerprint experts were pressed into service. Investigation is on.

`Educate rural girls'

TUMKUR JAN. 25. A. Lakshmisagar, former Minister, has cautioned the Union and State governments against neglecting the education of girls. Speaking after declaring open a couple of classrooms and a kitchen complex of a private school at Dommathari village here on Tuesday, Prof. Lakshmisagar said all rural development plans will become a farce if rural women remain uneducated. P. Kodandaramaiah, former MP, said people must question government officials to make them more responsive. Rural women will certainly do it if they are given good education, he said. Venkataramanappa, former MLA, said schools and colleges must educate girls. V.S. Ugrappa, MLC and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, who presided over the function, said it is a matter of grave concern that the number of dropouts is on the rise in rural areas.

Farmer killed by elephant

HAVERI JAN. 25. Prabhu Bangarappa Banakar (24), a farmer of Hirekaunshi village of Hangal taluk, was trampled to death by an elephant on Sunday. Another person, who was injured, is battling for his life at the government hospital. Officials of the Forest Department, who visited the spot, granted a compensation of Rs. 20,000 to the family members of the deceased, and promised a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh from the State Government. According to information available, a herd of 13 elephants, which has come from Dandeli, has been spotted in the interior areas of the taluk. At least 10 cases of crop damage have been registered so far. The herd has been spotted near Mantagi, Laxmipur, Balihalli, Kyasaru, Gotagodi and Hirekaunshi. Three farmers have sustained injuries owing to attacks by elephants in the Sirsi taluk, it is said.

`Govt. favouring industrialists'

TUMKUR JAN. 25. H.D. Kumaraswamy, Working President of the Janata Dal (Secular) State unit and MLA, today chose to criticise the N. Dharam Singh-led Government in the presence of four Ministers for what he described as "rolling out the red carpet for industrialists." Speaking at a public function at Thyamgondlu in Koratagere Assembly Constituency, Mr. Kumaraswamy took a dig at Mr. Singh for being "unduly enthusiastic" about wooing industrialists. "Industrialists are walking away with big benefits, including lengthy tax holidays," he said. In contrast, the Government is hardly responding to issues plaguing farmers, he added. C. Chennigappa, Minister for Sericulture; B. Satyanarayana, Minister of State for Rural Water Supply; Cheluvarayaswamy, Minister for Health; Alangur Srinivas, Minister for Horticulture, and others spoke.
