BANGALORE, JAN. 25. Sri Ramakrishna Vidyarthi Mandiram is celebrating its diamond jubilee from February 12 to 14 in Bangalore. The 60-year-old hostel was founded in 1944 by Thyagishanandaji, a senior monk, to help students who came to Bangalore seeking education. The hostel started with one inmate. Earlier, the monk had offered similar help to students in Kerala. He also started the Ramakrishna Mutt here, said Swatma Ramanada, warden of the hostel, at a press conference here today. In 1945, B. Narayana Rao, a philanthropist offered his home on Bull Temple Road for the construction of a larger hostel. Some devotees of the Sri Ramakrishna Mutt donated money. The numbers at the hostel grew to 20 persons. In 1952, when the mutt completed its 50th year, the hostel was further expanded. Poet K.V. Puttappa, who was then Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University, requested the Government to permit expansion of the hostel. In 1956, the foundation stone was laid for the new hostel.
