Dharna for `genuine' patta

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, JAN. 25. Demanding immediate action against a person, who reportedly sold a land by preparing forged documents, members of a family, including a 6-month-old boy, staged a dharna for a while in front of the Collectorate here today.

However, the head of the family, who wept un-consolably, was forcibly removed by the police and persuaded to give-up the dharna after officials assured him as usual that appropriate action would be taken to issue him a genuine patta.

A. Jesudoss (28), a labourer from Mudappaalam near Ambasamudram, said he purchased a land from one Marimuthu, a tailor from the same area, in 1998 for Rs. 8,000. When he recently approached the bank for housing loan, much to his shocking, it was found that the document was a forged one.

"Though I lodged a complaint at Ambasamudram police station, no action was taken against Marimuthu. Then I approached the Revenue Divisional Officer, Cheranmahadevi, and the Superintendent of Police, and submitted petitions. But no action was taken against him, forcing me to start an indefinite hunger strike in the Collectorate on November 12. But I gave up the protest then, as the officials assured action against the culprit. But nothing happened so far and everyone had let down my family. I'll commit suicide right inside the Collectorate with my family members," said. Jesudoss had sat in front of the Collectorate with his wife, Kavitha, and two sons. On hearing about the protest, police personnel from Palayamkottai police station came to the spot to pacify the man, who was keen to continue his agitation, as he could not get any assurance from the policemen.

However, the Palayamkottai tahsildar, Murugan, the sub-inspector of police, Palayamkottai, Sankar, appeased him and took him to the officials concerned to get his problem solved.

"I've been asked to come to the Collectorate again on January 27 and hopefully, my grievance would be redressed on that day," Mr. Jesudoss, when leaving the Collectorate with his family, told reporters.

The District Revenue Officer, R. Thambidurai, who came to know about this incident, asked his subordinates to present all the petitions submitted earlier by Mr. Jesudoss to know the actual position of the case for a speedy disposal.
