Taipei: Taiwan's President on Tuesday named a skilful negotiator from his party as the new Premier, while pledging reconciliation between his Government and the Opposition alliance, as well as China. The President, Chen Shui-bian, named Frank Hsieh, Mayor of Taiwan's second largest city of Kaohsiung, to replace Yu Shyi-kun, who was Premier for three years. A strategist in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, 58-year-old Mr. Hsieh will be Taiwan's No. 3 ranking leader. The Premier heads the Cabinet and brings Government policy to the legislature. Mr. Chen said Mr. Hsieh, an amateur gymnast, will be the best person to help ``open a new era of negotiations and dialogue'' with both the Opposition and rival China. Mr. Hsieh faces the difficult task of mending strained relations with the Opposition alliance of the Nationalist Party and People First Party.
