Pondicherry
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. The annual plan size for Pondicherry for 2005-06 was today fixed at Rs. 810 crores. This includes an interim relief of Rs. 100 crores for tsunami relief and a one-time Central assistance of Rs. 60 crores for general plan programmes. The plan size was finalised during a meeting between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangaswamy. During discussions, Dr. Ahluwalia told Mr. Rangaswamy that the main focus of the State at present should be on reconstruction and rehabilitation work in the tsunami-hit areas. He also assured the Chief Minister that the Commission would consider increasing the allocation for tsunami relief. He also wanted the State Government to identify the projects relating to tsunami rehabilitation for which allocation could be made later. The plan panel has also suggested to the State Government not to slow down on developmental activities in view of the efforts it has to make to carry out tsunami relief and rehabilitation. It also focused the attention of the State Government on the need to modernise the Pondicherry airport and upgrade the runway. Mr. Rangaswamy referred to the State's proposal including the establishment of a special economic zone, construction of an airport and development of its port and sought the Planning Commission's assistance in getting them cleared from the Home Ministry for Affairs.
The Planning Commission has complimented the State for 100 per cent utilisation of the plan outlay and for encouraging social demographic indicators where the performance of the State is above the all-India average.
