Govt. alone cannot ensure education for all: Manjunath

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JAN. 25. It is not possible for the State Government to meet commitments on education on its own. While the Government is doing its best in this regard, private managements have a vital role to bridge the gap to ensure that all sections of society have access to education, the Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, has said.

Foundation stone

Mr. Manjunath was laying the foundation stone for the College of Speech and Hearing promoted by Dr. M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust here on Tuesday.

The Minister said Dakshina Kannada district has a rich tradition in the field of education. "Most private colleges here are professionally managed. They strive to provide quality education at all times. Their example is worth emulating," he said. He lauded the trust for promoting the course.

The Government will support any venture that will benefit the people.

Appreciated

He appreciated the Mangalore University for granting affiliation to the course. Barring the Central Institute of Speech and Hearing in Mysore, which is affiliated to the University of Mysore, the college is the first to offer this course in private, he said.

About the convocation of Mangalore University held on Monday, Mr. Manjunath said women excelled in all spheres of education. "Girls have established an upper hand in the field of education in the district. Boys have to respond to this challenge," he said. Krishna Palemar, Suratkal MLA, who was the guest of honour, urged managements of private educational institutions to adopt a government school in their neighbourhood.

"Such steps will ensure that even students in rural and semi-urban areas have the best of facilities and opportunities to come up academically," he said.

The MLA urged the Minister to extend all the support to the anganwadis throughout the State.

B. Hanumaiah, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, presided over the function.

S. Shivaram Shetty, Academic Officer of the trust, welcomed the gathering. M. Ramgopal Shetty, trust secretary, spoke. Dattatreya, college principal, proposed a vote of thanks.
