Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, JAN. 25. The shamiana suppliers in Bellary observed bandh on Tuesday to register their protest against the imposition of 10.2 per cent service tax. The bandh will be observed on Wednesday in response to the call given by the North Karnataka Tent and Decorators' Welfare Association. The Shamiana Suppliers' Association, in a memorandum, urged the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, to immediately withdraw the service tax. Shivaprasad and P. Thirupaliah, president and secretary of the association, respectively, said that the tax was an additional burden on the shamiana suppliers. They have drawn the attention of the Finance Minister to the fact that their business was seasonal, lasting for about 55 days a year. They said that the suppliers were also undergoing loss of their articles in transit and heavy wear and tear.
