BELLARY, JAN. 25. The president of the Bellary Zilla Panchayat, G. Umesh, has urged the elected women representatives in gram panchayats to accord priority to education for women. He was speaking after inaugurating the district-level convention of members of gram panchayats jointly organised by the zilla panchayat and the Karnataka Women Representatives in Gram Panchayat Network at the Dr. Joladarashi Doddanagowda Rangamandir here on Monday. Mr. Umesh said that educating women is essential to properly implement the schemes granted to gram panchayats by the Government. He said that the State has tried to give adequate representation to women. G.S. Shivaswamy, chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, was the chief guest. He said that since the elected women representatives must exercise their rights to ensure proper implementation of the programmes and schemes. He exhorted the elected women representatives to give importance to women's education and help create awareness about family planning. The president of the network, Asha James, explained the activities of the organisation. She said that the network strived to politically empower women to help them actively participate in the political process. Kumuda Nayak, district coordinator of Nehru Yuvaka Kendra, called upon the women elected representatives to develop leadership qualities. The vice-president of the organisation, Meerabai, presided over the function. Sudharani, vice-president of the zilla panchayat; and Annadaiah, Deputy Secretary of the zilla panchayat; were present.
