HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today announced a modified free power policy restricting the free benefit to dry land farmers having up to three pump sets and to those having up to 2.5 acres of land under major and medium irrigation projects, both irrespective of pump set capacity. The benefit has been denied to big farmers under these projects, corporate farms and IT-assessees owning cultivable lands. These categories, however, have been offered concessional tariff on installation of four types of power-saving devices (PSD).He said the authorities concerned had removed 3 lakh unauthorised connections and if any farmer from this category wanted connection, he would have to pay tariff at 20 paise a unit as under the `tatkal' scheme. The AP Transco would release 50,000 new connections annually under `free category'.
