Villupuram to host Bharathiar Day Games

By Our Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM, JAN. 25. The Chief Educational Officer, S. Kannappan, today told The Hindu that Villupuram would host the State-level 22nd Bharathiar Day Games-2004-05. The games, to be held from January 27 to 29, are for students between 15 to 17 years, he said.

The events will include football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, kabadi, kho-kho, table tennis, handball (a new discipline) and tennis. These would be conducted at different venues in Villupuram and Tindivanam.

As many as 1,700 boys and 1,400 girls — all winners in the divisional-level games — from all over the State, along with 500 teachers and referees will participate. Mr. Kannappan said the winners would receive "Form B" certificates that would help them in professional course admissions and jobs.

Villupuram hosted this event three years ago. The games were to have been held either during the last week of December or in the first week of January, but were postponed due to the tsunami, he said.
