PONDICHERRY, JAN. 25. The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, has said that doctors from the Health Department here conducted a study on the quality of water available from the upper layer of subsoil water in the tsunami-hit villages. The findings had been sent to a research institute in Kolkata for its opinion. Mr. Valsaraj, who declared open a Rs. 16-lakh sub-centre (maternal and child health care centre) of the Department of Health at Korkadu village near here today, said that the people in the coastal villages could use the treated water available through taps instead of consuming water from hand pumps. A detailed plan was drawn up to construct houses for the displaced families and to supply boats and nets to the fishermen.The Centre had sanctioned Rs. 152 crores towards relief and rehabilitation works in villages in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. Stating that the Health Department had a full team of doctors in the main hospital and also in peripheral areas, he said that very soon nursing staff would be appointed. The sub-centre in the village would function day and night.

The Administration had installed Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment and a CT scanner in Karaikal. They were covered under annual maintenance contract with the company that supplied them so that there would be no problem in their utilisation. The Director of Health and Family Welfare Services, G. Subramanian Reddy, said that health delivery system was good in the Union Territory as could be seen from the maternal mortality rate which stood at 0.2 per thousand against five per thousand at the national level. Similarly, infant mortality rate was 22 per thousand in Pondicherry against the national average of 63. The local legislator, N. Gangadharan, wanted the department to ensure that the rural hospitals and community health centre at Karikalambakkam had ample stock of anti-venom to save people bitten by snakes and poisonous reptiles. The Deputy Director of Health, Vijaya Balakandan, gave a welcome speech.
