Call for another revolution

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, JAN.25. The Haryana Governor, A.R. Kidwai, today said that India was rapidly becoming a world power. In his customary Republic Day message, Dr. Kidwai said : "During the past 55 years India had shown tremendous progress in the fields of agriculture, industries, information technology, communication and some other fields of development. We would have to work very hard to achieve this goal. We would have to perform our duty seriously. The progress of the nation was our progress. Today, the need of the hour is that the whole of the country should work unitedly for nation-building, only then and then, we can face every challenge of this era of globalization and can make India a developed nation of the world by 2020."

He also congratulated the people of Haryana for transforming it into one of the leading developed States of the country in many developmental and welfare fields with their hard-work and sincere devotion.

The Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, said that the people of Haryana had played a vital role in the freedom struggle of the country. While the hardy farmers of Haryana made it surplus in agricultural production, the brave soldiers hailing from the State made sacrifices to maintain unity and integrity of the country, he added.

While expressing concern over the deteriorating moral values and social evils like poverty, illiteracy and unemployment, Mr. Chautala said that it was high time to usher yet another revolution, on the pattern of revolution for freedom, to eradicate these social evils from the society and restore these moral values. Therefore, the youth should have the same zeal and enthusiasm, which they had during the freedom struggle of the country, he added.

In his message, the Punjab Governor and Administrator of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, said that the Republic Day celebrations this year had been dampened by the holocaust of the Tsunami tragedy. "It is a matter of pride that our whole Nation rose to the occasion and launched relief and rehabilitation on a massive scale. We are still in the process of emerging from the shock and hope for the early return of normalcy. This was possible only because of timely and sustained action by the Government machinery, generous support by voluntary organisations, the dedication of individual philanthropists and above all the admirable courage and fortitude of the people of the affected areas themselves."

He further said that Chandigarh throbs with new life and is on the move at a fast pace in a peaceful environment. It has established its reputation as a pioneer and leader for the rest of the country in many respects. It excels in pursuing good governance, has a responsive Administration and an accountable Government machinery at all levels, which are the hallmarks of a welfare state.
