CHENNAI, JAN. 25 . The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman, G. Madhavan Nair, and his predecessor, K. Kasturirangan, today appealed to the youth, especially students, to adopt an innovative work approach to help the country occupy a pride of place in the comity of nations by 2020. Dr. Nair, who received the 10th `National Science and Technology Award', instituted by Sathyabama Deemed University here, said though the reform policy followed by the successive Governments at the Centre provided benefits to the country, 260 million people were below the poverty line and 360 million were illiterates and living in rural areas. The challenges facing the country called for an integrated action in education, healthcare, disaster prevention and mitigation, e-governance, natural resources development and environment management. The Centre for Remote Sensing and Geo Informatics a joint initiative by the ISRO and Sathyabama Deemed University, which Dr. Nair launched was established in 15 days. The centre would provide vital data, besides an excellent ground for training people. He suggested that the permanent space exhibition set up on the campus be made a full-fledged science and technology museum. He appealed to the youth to acquire knowledge and use it for creating world-class products and services. The ISRO would help village resource centres developed and run by the Jeppiaar Education Trust. Dr. Kasturirangan hailed the contributions made by Dr. Nair to the ISRO. Referring to the achievements made in science and technology in recent times, he said the Indian youth were second to none in doing things in the right direction. They should understand that learning was a difficult but continuous process, of which innovation was the focal point. The university founder and chancellor, Jeppiaar, said 347 successful candidates were recruited by reputed IT companies through campus interviews. The institution would earmark 10 lakh sqft for the Software Technology Park of India, which would take in 40 per cent of the students who scored high marks. The institution would launch an IT unit to provide jobs to those who did not score good marks.
