HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. A sten gun of one of the Personal Security Officers (PSOs) of the slain TDP MLA, Paritala Ravi, was missing following the attack on him on Monday. Police sources said it may have been carried away by Ravi's men in the melee. The ten PSOs of the MLA were provided with four sten guns and a pistol whenever they were on duty, in shifts. There were five of them for his personal security in each shift.
No clues yet
Director General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, said no clues were yet available to identify the assailants. But, he said the police were probing the mafia angle and personal grudges with Ravi. The clues may be available somewhere on these lines, he added. Mr. Sen did not confirm reports about Karnataka's Mandya connections with the incident. Sources said that generally the PSOs were given only one pistol for the security of the protectees but more weapons were provided in the case of Ravi in view of heightened threat perception to his life. Ravi was never said to have complained about suspicious behaviour or poor training in handling weapons by his PSOs although several questions have now been raised about their effectiveness due to their failure to repulse the attack. Ravi was initially provided with four PSOs but it was gradually enhanced to ten in three instalments upon his request, discussion coming up in the Assembly and court order.
`A precision act'
A highly placed official said he did not expect such an attack on Ravi in this manner, given the large number of followers around him at any given time. He expected the assailants to have won over some TDP activists at their office in Anantapur before launching the attack. Otherwise, it was a difficult job for two of them to sneak into the office and remain holed up for a couple of hours without being observed by the TDP men.
