Law will take its course, says YSR

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. The State Cabinet, which met here on Tuesday, decided to hand over the case of Paritala Ravindra's murder to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Announcing this at a press conference, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the Cabinet decided to request the Centre to institute a CBI inquiry and also refer the case to the judicial commission working on the political murders in Anantapur district.

He said he had full faith in the state agencies and their impartial nature, but as the FIR in the case named his son, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, a Cabinet Minister, J.C. Diwakar Reddy and a senior police officer, IG of Rayalaseema Region, R.P. Meena, the Cabinet preferred a CBI probe.

`Shocking incident'

Expressing anguish at the physical elimination of Paritala Ravindra, the Chief Minister said such abominable acts had no place in civilised society. "It is a shocking incident and I am feeling bad about it. Law will be more severely and strictly enforced and order will be maintained," he said.

Referring to the allegation that his son had a hand in the murder, he said such lowly campaign was even more deplorable.

Rejecting the TDP charge that his family was also steeped in factionism, he said the fact that the killers of his father, Raja Reddy, had gone scot free, proved otherwise.

Ravi's murder had several angles to it and the probe would establish whether it was a result of the faction violence or a mafia killing or an act of extremists. "Perhaps, it is due to all. Where is the need for me to resort to faction killings? Do I have a property dispute with him?" he asked.

He ruled out dropping Mr. Diwakar Reddy from the Cabinet as he was facing a mere allegation from the Opposition. "Has any precedent been set by the TDP? Have they not continued even those against whom charges were proved in the Cabinet," he said.

He dismissed the demand for his resignation asking the TDP "why did not Naidu resign after the Jubilee Hills Bomb Blast case in which 26 innocent persons were killed and Paritala escaped. Where had your moral responsibility gone then?"

`Enough security'

Ruling out lapses in providing security to the slain legislator, Dr. Reddy said Ravi was given 10-man protection.

"Who is not having security in TDP? Errabelli Dayakar Rao has 12 gunmen. Former Home Minister, T. Devender Goud, has at least 20 and Mr. Naidu himself more than 100. In fact I do not have that many," he said.

Arson decried

Deploring TDP arson, he said TDP workers at the behest of their leaders had damaged 557 APSRTC buses and burnt 85. "A woman teacher died this morning when a TDP leaders' car knocked her down in Krishna district. What kind of a protest is this?"

He wondered whether there was a design to the TDP district meetings yesterday as all channels beamed the TDP preparedness for the arson. "Did we ever do it? The way they had taken law into their hands on telephonic instructions from their leader is unbelievable. How could they put women and children to such discomfort?" he asked.
