KSEB engineers support power Act

KOLLAM, JAN. 25. The KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) Engineers' Association has urged trade unions in the board to call off what it described as a vilification campaign against the Electricity Act, 2003.

The general secretary of the association, S.K. Yeshodharan, told the The Hindu here on Monday that political vested interests were behind the campaign.

The Act came into force on June 10, 2003 and Kerala was given a year to enforce its provisions. Later, one more year was given for the purpose. This meant that the Act should come into force in June.

Financially viable

Mr. Yeshodharan said the Act would help make the KSEB financially viable. Although it was being opposed in Kerala, the Act had a smooth passage in Parliament. The United Progressive Alliance Government and the Left parties supporting it had not voiced any concern about the Act.

The reason for this was that privatisation of electricity boards had not been stipulated in the Act. Yet, rumours to the contrary were being spread in the State, he added.

According to him, the Act enabled the private sector to start power production.

"That will be a positive development under the prevailing power sector scenario," he said adding that this would lead to competition and make the board more competitive.

The association was of the view that the Act would help rejuvenate the board.
