Kollam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOLLAM, JAN. 25. No sooner had this year's festival season commenced than the first incident of a tusker running amok in Kollam was reported from Eravipuram in the city today. The tusker, Velayudhan, went into rage while taking part in a procession held in connection with the Taipooya Festival of the Vanchikovil Saravana Temple. The Technical Expert of the Elephant Squad attached to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), B. Aravind, who examined the tusker later, said that the animal was not in musth. He felt that the absence of the first mahout may have provoked the tusker to go into a rage. At 1 p.m. while the `kavadi' procession was in progress, the tusker turned violent and knocked down the second mahout with its trunk. The mahout escaped with minor injuries. At that time, two persons carrying ornamental umbrellas were sitting astride the tusker. When the elephant made attempts to run amok, the duo on top clambered onto a tree and escaped. Several children were also taking part in the procession. Meanwhile, personnel from the Elephant Squad rushed to the scene and with the help of mahouts present there managed to tether the tusker to a tree.
