TIRUPATI, JAN. 24. As a prelude to `Metlotsavam', the festival of steps, Dasa devotees held `Nagara Sankeerthana' in the form of a colourful procession from Govindaraja temple to Thyagaraja mandapam on Monday. Sri Vidyadheesa Theertha, the pontiff of Palimar Mutt, Udupi, led the procession. Thousands of Haridasa devotees, clad in traditional yellow, took part in the procession. Speaking on the significance of the event, Appannacharya, special officer of TTD's Dasa Sahitya Project, explained how the Kannada Haridasas of yesteryear set the practice of trekking the hills singing bhajans on Venkateswara, whom they revered as `Tirumalaraya'. Around 5,000 devotees from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Orissa took part in the procession.
