MYSORE, JAN. 25. Bharath Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), Mysore Telecom District, on Tuesday unveiled four new packages for landline users in addition to the existing four packages. The new packages will be available from February 1. Disclosing this to presspersons here, the General Manager of Mysore Telecom, T.K. Chandrashekar, said the new tariffs that had been chalked were area specific. He said BSNL was fixing tariff on an all-India basis and it had been changed to area specific recently. He said, "Depending on the usage, a subscriber can choose from among the packages according to the need. Option forms have been made available at the consumer care centres, and one can change over to different tariff plan by filling the form and submitting it in any of the centres or exchanges." While change over to the new tariff package had been made optional, not many subscribers had changed over even when the packages were announced earlier. The new packages were called Budget, Popular, Classic and Elite, and these would be made available to subscribers according to their telephone usage, he said. In the Budget package, the rent was Rs. 250 a month. The subscriber would be entitled to 125 free calls. Calls exceeding the limit would be charged at Rs. 1.20 per unit. Mr. Chandrashekar said this package would be useful for those who made more than 300 call units a month. The Popular package would come at Rs. 490 a month as rent and the subscriber would be entitled to 475 free calls, and every call unit exceeding this number would cost Rs. 1.10. This could benefit subscribers whose call units were in the range of 301 and 900 a month. The Classic package would be made available at a monthly rent of Rs. 990 with 1,000 free calls. This would benefit subscribers whose call units were in the range of 901 and 1,450 a month. Each call exceeding the limit would be charged at Re. 1. A higher end package for heavy users, the Elite package would come at Rs. 1,450 a month and the subscriber would be entitled to 1,800 free calls a month. Every call exceeding the limit would cost 90 paise. This would benefit subscribers whose call units went beyond 1,450 calls a month, Mr. Chandrashekar said. Barring the Budget package where the effective rental would be Rs. 100, all the other three packages would be effectively rent free as the number of free calls would cover the fixed rent, he said.
More users
Mr. Chandrashekar also disclosed that 20 new sites were being added by BSNL in Mysore, while 10 to 12 such sites would be added in rural areas. Acknowledging that network congestion existed in the city, he said it was because of the increasing number of BSNL users. There were more than 30,000 BSNL mobile users in the city, and around 60 lakhs in the State. Exuding confidence that the congestion would come down once towers were set up, he said more SIM cards could be issued with the reduction in network congestion. Nearly 40,000 to 50,000 SIM cards would be distributed by May, he added. Regarding the controversy over road cutting with the Mysore City Corporation, Mr. Chandrashekar acknowledged procedural lapses. He said in a specific case in Lashkar Mohalla, trenches were being dug without permission from the corporation. Normally, BSNL would inform the corporation over the nature of work and area before starting work, which, however was not followed at Lashkar Mohalla. The officers had been instructed not to take up any work without permission from the corporation, he added.
