NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. North India continued to shiver under cold wave conditions with fresh snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and rains in Jammu and Kashmir aggravating the chill, though citizens in the Capital were greeted by a spot of sunshine today after recording the season's coldest day yesterday. Cold wave conditions prevailed in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and in some parts of Uttaranchal and north Rajasthan. Rain or thundershowers have occurred at many places in Jammu and Kashmir and at isolated places in Orissa, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, weather office said. Delhiites huddled out of bed this morning expecting another cloudy, nippy day but were surprised by sunshine. The mercury climbed to 7.1 degrees Celsius today from yesterday's 5.7 degrees. However, the respite was not without disruptions. BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who was to kick off his party's campaign trail today in Haryana, was forced to cancel his trip due to inclement weather conditions. The six-seater aircraft by which he was to leave for Sirsa en route to Yamuna Nagar was not allowed to take off by the airport authorities because of poor visibility, official sources said. But, flight operations were normal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport though the arrival and departure of several trains were delayed at the New Delhi Railway Station. The bad news for the people of the city is that Republic Day is likely to be bleak with cloudy weather forecast for tomorrow. This will be a contrast to the typically sunny day that Delhiites are used to every year. The weather office has predicted a partly cloudy sky and light rains and thundershowers tomorrow. UNI
