Grenade blast in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, JAN. 25. The Assam Governor, Lt. Gen. (retd.) Ajai Singh, today said floods and unemployment in the State were bigger problems than militancy even as suspected United Liberation Front of Asom men triggered a grenade blast. Police also recovered a powerful explosive device in the city.

Militants lobbed a grenade near the N.F. Railway headquarters at Maligaon here this evening. Earlier in the morning, police recovered a programmable time device fitted with RDX from the thickly-populated railway colony in the Bamunimaidan area. The five kg device was later defused by explosives experts.

Lt. Gen. Singh, in an informal chat with reporters at the Raj Bhavan, however, urged the people not to panic.

The State Government has taken elaborate security measures to thwart any attempts to sabotage the Republic Day celebrations.

He also urged the ULFA to follow the example of the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers and come for peace talks without any preconditions.
