Bal Bharti bags honours

NEW DELHI JAN. 25. The 42nd Annual Nehru Bal Mela prizes were distributed at a function organised jointly by the Nehru Bal Samiti and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture here on Tuesday.

T.S. Shirram of DAV Public School and Monica Chopra of St. Thomas received the Kala Bhusan Award, while Pawan Kumar Sahu of Rani Dutta Arya Vidyalaya bagged the Samiti's Kala Shree Award.

The Lieutenant-Governor's running trophy was bagged by Bal Bharti Public School for the highest score in the Bal Mela stage programmes.

A cultural programme was also presented by students on the occasion.

To punish or not

NEW DELHI JAN. 25. A Hindi debate competition on "Should teachers punish children or not'' was organised by DPS Indirapuram recently as part of its Inter House Competitions meet.

At the debate, students expressed their views on the topic and spoke with conviction. At the end of the competition, Anubha Sharma of Chenab House was adjudged the winner.

A Patriotic Group Song Competition was also held simultaneously during which the auditorium reverberated with national fervour as all the four houses presented patriotic songs. In this competition, Jhelum and Chenab Houses walked away with the honours. The principal, Meeta Rai, who encouraged the participants and gave away certificates to the winners, said such "competition helps foster fellow feeling and encourages healthy competition among children''.

Republic Day celebrated

NEW DELHI JAN. 25. The students of Vidya Bhawan Mahavidyalaya celebrated Republic Day with zeal here on Tuesday. The function started with the hoisting of the National flag by the Deputy Director of Education, Rita Sharma.The Assistant Registrar of Delhi State Co-operative Societies, Yogiraj, was also present. The students presented a march past, cultural programmes and a dance-and-song drama on the Independence struggle.

They also performed a fishermen dance in memory of the tsunami victims. The founder of the school, Pushpa Devi, presented a cheque for Rs 10,000 to Rita Sharma for the relief and rehabilitation of the tsunami victims.

CIE to tie-up with more schools

NEW DELHI JAN. 25. The University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) -- the world leader in international assessments and qualifications -- plans to tie-up with 150 Indian schools by this year-end. Presently the CIE has tied-up with 75 schools in the country. The CIE Regional Manager, Mark Bartholomev, said: "We are providing the International General Certificate of Secondary School for school students at the age of 16.

Students in more than 150 countries take the CIE school qualifications. These qualifications are known for their excellence and acceptability in universities and companies at home and abroad."
