NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. The prestigious Presidential Award was today conferred on senior intelligence officer of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Nirmal Swarup, by the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, at an investiture ceremony here at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Mr. Swarup's qualities of professional competence, dedication to duty and consistently high level of performance with sincerity have earned him the distinction of receiving the Presidential Certificate of Appreciation for Distinguished Record of Service. Mr. Swarup -- who joined as Inspector of Central Excise and Customs in 1975 and was promoted Superintendent in 1992 -- has worked in various capacities in the Commissionerates of Central Excise, Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. With his intelligence network Mr. Swarup is credited with seizures of contraband gold, silver, narcotics and miscellaneous foreign goods valued at Rs.3.10 crores and detection of cases of evasion of Central excise duty amounting to Rs.8.54 crores.
