KOCHI, JAN. 25. `Made in China' is something of an upmarket tag today in India. It is also a ploy that many a cottage industry uses in India, whether a product is made in Kunnamkulam or in Kochi. It is something like `Indian made foreign liquor.' Here, however, local enterprise seems to have gone a tad too far. The latest, supposedly from China, is the Indian tricolour. In time for Republic Day, outlets here have stocked this flag, priced at Rs. 24. In a corner is the `Made in China' marking. If you thought `Hindi-Chini bhai bhai' has reached new heights, you have another thing coming. The shopkeepers have a silent smile for you. They do not know where exactly the flags originate, but certainly it is not Shanghai or Beijing. From an optimist's point of view, it is a tribute to both Chinese and Indian enterprise: On the one side, going to show that the Chinese are industrious workers, never letting go of an opportunity. On the other hand, we have our own small-time businessmen ever-ready to use any business strategy to sell their products.
