THRISSUR JAN. 25. Farmers from Kolazhy panchayat in the district burnt a few bundles of paddy today in protest against falling prices. Another unique feature of the protest held in front of the panchayat office was that the participants were blaming all political parties for their plight. They were being forced to sell paddy at Rs. 500 per quintal to the agents of private rice mills whereas last year they had got much higher rates, the farmers said. Their demand is that the Government should fix the procurement price for paddy as Rs. 800 per quintal and that the Government should extend support to cooperative mills and societies to procure paddy at that rate. Farmers staged a dharna in front of the panchayat office later.
