KUNNAMKULAM, JAN. 25. The `I' group nominee, C.K. Kunjunni, was today elected vice-chairman of the United Democratic Front-ruled Kunnamkulam Municipality, with the support of CPI(M). While Mr. Kunjunni bagged 17 votes, the rival candidate, Sosamma Mohan of `A' group, polled only ten votes. The two BJP members in the 31-member Municipal Council abstained from voting; the vote of the lone Muslim League member, E.P. Kamarruddin, was declared invalid. One of the `A' group members could not attend the meeting. Even though the CPI(M) had fielded a candidate, their councillors were directed by the party to vote for the `I' group nominee. The election of vice-chairman was necessitated as Mr. Kamarruddin who was occupying that post was voted out through a no-confidence motion moved by the CPI(M) late last year, with the support of the `I' group.
