By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 25 . Security has been strengthened in the State in view of the Republic Day celebrations.

With the December 26 tsunami strike still fresh in public memory, the authorities do not want to take chances. They have posted swimmers and police personnel along the coast, particularly in Chennai, as a precautionary measure, police said.

The police have been put on general alert in view of the celebrations. Vehicular checks to monitor the movements of anti-social elements had already commenced and it continued, the police said. Beat patrolling, including by motorcycle-borne personnel, in the interior areas had also been intensified.
