Paritala murder case for CBI

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today announced the Cabinet decision to hand over the case relating to the murder of the Telugu Desam MLA, Paritala Ravi, at Anantapur town to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Dr. Reddy told mediapersons after a two-hour scheduled Cabinet meeting that though he and his Cabinet colleagues had full faith in the State police, a decision was taken to shift the case to the CBI as there was a mention of his son, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, the Panchayat Raj Minister, J.C. Diwakar Reddy, and a senior police officer, R. P. Meena, in the First Information Report filed with the Anantapur police.

"No one needs to question our Government's impartiality, honesty and transparency. Law will be strictly enforced," he said expressing shock and concern at the killing of the legislator. The case would also be referred to the Judicial Commission appointed to look at faction killings.

The Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, confirmed that cases had been registered under Section 302 and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code, based on the FIR. The complainant, Ravi's uncle, named six persons, including Dr. Reddy's son. Mr. Sen said there had been no breakthrough in the investigation so far. Four police parties had fanned out to trace the culprits. The police were looking at the case from all angles.

The State-wide bandh called by the Telugu Desam Party turned violent at several places. With the State Road Transport Corporation withdrawing its buses in view of Monday's incidents, TDP workers targeted Government offices and some property belonging to the Congress leaders while enforcing the bandh.

There were several instances of Telugu Desam workers ransacking mandal revenue offices and mandal development offices. In some places, party workers fought pitched battles with the police.

Violence marred the funeral of Ravi at his native Venkatapuram village in Anantapur this evening. Hundreds of his supporters raised slogans against the Government.

At the burial site, some of them turned their ire at the police and mediapersons and threw stones at them, injuring 10 constables. The police withdrew after the attack. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and other senior party leaders drove down to Venkatapuram from Hyderabad to attend the funeral.

Charge refuted

The Chief Minister criticised the arson resorted to by TDP workers during the bandh and referred to the killing of a woman teacher in Krishna district. He said she was run over by a vehicle in which TDP workers were going round to enforce bandh.

At a press conference, Dr. Reddy's son, Jagan Mohan Reddy, refuted the charge of his involvement in the murder. The police officer, Mr. Meena, who too denied the allegation, sought protection for his family.
