Conflicting reports on `missing' currency

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, JAN. 25. A sheet of 40 notes of Rs. 100 amounting to Rs. 4,000 was reported missing from the RBI Note Printing Press here, sending jitters among the management and staff.

Though a senior official in the note printing press denied that such an incident had taken place, a few others contradicted him. They said that the currency sheet had indeed been missing, but added that it was only misplaced. The sheet was traced within the printing press premises.

The incident came to light today when a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was camping here to question a few employees in connection with the Rs. 50 lakhs that went missing during transit to Thiruvananthapuram last year.

While officials deny that any such incident took place at all, the former MLA A. Ramdas, who is the president of the RBI Note Mudran Employees' Union, said that he has information that the currency sheet went missing but could not confirm whether it had been traced. "But this underlines the procedural lapses and poor security norms being followed by the management," he added.
