Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, JAN. 25. The MCF General Workers' Union has demanded the reinstatement of more than 120 workers of the Urea and DAP loading unit of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF), who have been "unceremoniously removed" from their jobs in August 2004. Addressing presspersons here today, the adviser for the union, B.S. Chandru, alleged that the management of the company was being unfair to the workers, who had been working in the company for more than 25 years.
Renewal of contract
He said that the workers had been working on a contract basis and the previous contract had expired on June 30, 2000, after which the management did not renew the contract. He accused the management of indulging in delaying tactics whenever the workers pressed for the renewal of the contract . "Despite working diligently for the last 25 years, the management has not confirmed our employment and even while being on contract basis, we have been kept out of the jobs," Mr. Chandru said.
Company defends sack
When contacted by The Hindu , the Company Secretary of MCF, Kannan, said that this particular union was unregistered and that they have no legal standing as the workers had worked under a contractor and not directly under the MCF. He said that the contractor had closed his establishment and terminated his services with MCF following constant "'unreasonable demands" made by the workers. According to Mr. Kannan, the termination was done in a legal manner, where the protesting workers were given compensation cheques by the contractor.
