By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI, JAN. 25. D.T. Jayakumar, Tourism Minister, said on Tuesday that a special package for the development of roads in Udupi district will be sought from the State Government.

Mr. Jayakumar told presspersons after a review meeting here that the Government has released Rs. 3 crores for the maintenance of roads belonging to the Public Works Department in the district.

Power project

He said the Government preferred to set up a power project near Padubidri in the district because the State is reeling under acute power shortage. Environments safeguards will be taken.

About the bad condition of fountains at Malpe beach, he said he will inspect them on Wednesday.

While some departments have made good progress, the others are lagging behind. The district is lagging behind in the distribution of sites, which is very slow. The meetings of the Ashraya Committee, Land Tribunal, and Land Regularisation Committee, needed to be held regularly, he said.

Office complex

The Minister said the development of Udupi district for seven years since its formation is unsatisfactory. The district offices complex is yet to come up. The process of identifying land for the complex is in final stages. In two months, drinking water problem is expected in some areas. Such areas have been identified and remedial measures are being taken, Mr. Jayakumar said.

The MLA, K. Raghupati Bhat; the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt; the Superintendent of Police, S. Murugan; and the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, A.M. Kunjappa, were present.

Kanaka goupra

About the controversy over "Kanaka Gopura", Mr. Jayakumar said issue will be resolved amicably through talks.

"Kanaka Gopura" is not such an issue that defies solution. It is left to the will power of the parties concerned. He refused to give any date on which talks will be held.
