Mangalore University exhibition begins

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JAN. 25. A six-day exhibition organised as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Mangalore University began at Mangalagangotri here on Tuesday.

Thirty-three departments of the university are participating in the exhibition, said T.R. Sridharmurthy, chairman of the exhibition committee.

In the Department of Inorganic Chemistry, students will explain about chemical tests that can be conducted to find out if food items are adulterated. A case in point is the adulteration of milk, biscuits, honey, and butter. During the chemical analysis, colour of the said products will change if they are adulterated. Manufacturers, who resort to adulteration, mix starch with milk, metanil yellow powder or lead chromate to biscuits or smashed potatoes for butter. Chemical tests will reveal the adulteration. Models of water softening process, greenhouse effect, and effluent treatment plant, which can be set up without using any power are on display.

The Department of Geo Informatics has explained it through charts and computer simulations. Identifying potential fishing zones through satellite (IRS-P4) has been exhibited.

The Department of Applied Zoology and Biosciences give information about DNA fingerprinting, economic importance of fish, biodiversity of insect pests, a model of Mitochondria, cloning, Indian forests and wildlife, ants on cashew plants, biodiversity hotspots, marine molluscan fauna, and butterfly diversity. Arrangements have been made for testing samples to find out pesticide contents in vegetables, residual chlorine in drinking water, spot tests to find out blood sugar level, and blood group. The pictures of Nobel Prize winners in Economics since 1969 with a brief introduction have been displayed in the Department of Economics.

The departments of Tourism Administration, Materials Science, Political Science, Commerce, Statistics, Mathematics, Library Information, Physics, English, and Botony have put up their exhibits.
