Tiruchi-Chidambaram road portions to be re-laid

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, JAN. 25 .The badly damaged stretches of the Tiruchi-Chidambaram highway in Tiruchi district will be patched up and re-laid at a cost of about Rs.2.60 crores under the Central Road Fund and Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project during the current financial year, the Collector, V.Pandian, has said.

Meanwhile, patch works have been taken up on the road, which suffered an extensive damage during the rain in November and December last year. The road caters to a huge volume of traffic, especially cement-laden lorries, to and from the cement factories located in the Ariyalur region.

Work on improving the Poovalur Bypass Road and badly damaged stretches of the Tiruchi-Chidambaram highway would be taken up immediately at a cost of Rs.1.40 crores under the Central Road Fund. The remaining stretches of the highway, for a total distance of about 35 km, would be strengthened at a cost of Rs.1.20 crores under the Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project.

Estimates were being prepared for the work currently, Mr.Pandian told presspersons here today.

New family cards

Answering a query, Mr.Pandian said that the road overbridge coming up across the railway level crossing at Valadi on the Lalgudi Road would be completed by August. Fourteen of the 24 piers for the bridge had been constructed so far.

The road overbridge at Palakkarai in the city would be completed by September, he added.

Referring to the distribution of new ration cards, Mr. Pandian said that 85,864 of the 1.03 lakh new family cards had been distributed so far. Out of the 1.66 lakh applications received seeking new cards in the district, about 63,200 were rejected for various reasons. About 14,600 families were yet to collect their new cards and had been sent individual intimations to collect the cards from the respective Taluk Supply Office before January 31. About 8,019 applicants have filed appeals over the non-receipt of new cards. The appeals were being verified and sent to the Government with appropriate recommendations. However, in most cases some technical snag was said to be non-issue of new cards by the ELCOT. This would be rectified soon, he said.

Health camps

Mr. Pandian said that the Health Department would conduct special health camps in all panchayat unions in the district from February 10 to March 29. The camps to be conducted by doctors of the K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital would focus on screening the people for various diseases, including respiratory ailments, cardiac problems, diabetes, neurological problems, eye, dental, ENT and mental health. Specialists from the G.Viswanathan Cancer Hospital and the Kavery Medical Centre would also attend the camps to screen the people for cancer. The Government has sanctioned Rs.9.38 lakhs for conducting the camps.
