Bus shelters

Sir, — On Thanjavur Road, there are Subramaniapuram and Ranjithapuram bus stops between Tollgate and G.Corner.

But these stops do not have shelters. Besides, the embankment of the road is very poor.

I request the authorities to do the needful immediately.

H.Ghouse Baig,
Tiruchi.

Bus service

Sir, — Town buses plying from Central Bus Stand to Chatram Bus Stand through the Collector Office avoid the Office from 8.30 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Government and private bus operators blame each other when questioned about non-availability of buses to the Office.

It is ridiculous that the bus operators do not obey permit rules. The RTO, Tiruchi, should conduct periodical or random checking and straightaway suspend the permit of those vehicles, which fail to operate buses to the Collector Office. The poor and aged people are badly affected.

Will the Collector kindly look into this issue?

K. Somasundaram,
Tiruchi.

Streetlights

Sir, — The Bypass Road in Kumbakonam, which was laid at the time of the Mahamaham festival, enables the public to go to Chennai Road from Mayavaram Road.

Early morning and evening walkers use the road to have fresh air. However, the municipal authorities have not provided streetlights even after 10 months of laying this road.

Thus, it has become a haven for anti-social elements. It creates panic in the minds of the public.

R.Jayasankar,
Kumbakonam.

Phone tariff

Sir, — The recent revision in local telephone tariff in public booths from Re. one to Rs. two is unjustifiable decision of the Government. Generally, the poor people use these booths in case of emergencies.

The Government should withdraw the hike immediately and maintain status quo.

K.Santhanam,
Kumbakonam.

Traffic jam

Sir, — In Karur, the road leading to Kamaraj Market from Anna Arch is too narrow and unfit for two-way traffic.

Four-wheelers coming from Church Corner should ply through the rear side of Kalaiarangam. In return journey, they can touch Kamaraj Market and ply through the front side of Kalaiarangam.

Since this road discipline is not enforced, buses operating from both sides ply through the front side of Kalaiarangam causing heavy traffic congestion near Kamaraj Market.

When it happens during peak hours, office-goers and school going children suffer a lot. Will the authorities enforce the rules?

SP. Murugappan,
Karur.

Water pollution

Sir, — The public in many parts of Karur had to go without potable water for the past one week as the municipal authorities have suspended supply because of the release of highly polluted water from the Orathupalayam reservoir into the Noyyal that drains into the Cauvery.

The problem haunts the Karur and nearby towns repeatedly causing misery to human beings and livestock whenever the reservoir is drained.

I request the authorities to find a permanent and lasting solution to the problem.

S. Balasubramanian,
Karur.

Poor laboratories

Sir, — Sometimes, doctors in private clinics give prescriptions based on reports of laboratories.

But these laboratories are poorly equipped and operated by unqualified persons in Tiruchi. They also collect huge sum as fee.

In Chennai, the laboratories give proper diagnostic reports. It is not clear why the doctors in Tiruchi send their patients to ill-equipped laboratories.

So, the government should intervene and regulate the functioning of laboratories.

Ansar,
Tiruchi.

Woes of students

Sir, — The Directorate of Distance Education in Madurai Kamaraj University should lessen the burden of outstation students doing M.Phil.

Late dispatch of consolidated mark statements and course completion certificates, improper communication and lack of proper library facilities at the Tiruchi Study Centre are some of the problems faced by these students.

The CCC looks like a voucher and does not appear to be a certificate. So, I request the authorities and DDE to take steps to make M. Phil. (distant education) hassle-free.

David Peniel,
Tiruchi.

Tiruchi.
