MADURAI, JAN.25. Hundreds of devotees today witnessed the float festival of the Meenakshi Amman Sundareswarar Temple held in the Mariamman Temple tank here. The event drew the crowds from various parts of the district and from other places in the State. The devotees started descending upon the temple tank since morning and partook of the event of the tastefully decorated float being brought around. The spectacle lasted for a little over one hour in the morning and night as the float was taken twice around the tank. Shortly after this, it was berthed at the mandapam located at the centre of the impressive square shaped teppakulam (temple tank) built by the King Tirumalai Nayak. The idols of Goddess Meenakshi, Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Piriyavidai were taken to the central mandapam for puja. The acme of the festival commenced after 8.45 p.m. when the idols of the Goddesses and the Lord were placed on the illuminated float, which was decked with flowers and brought around the mandap. Even before the float started, the devotees enveloped the four streets surrounding the tank. Those who were in the far corners of the tank surged towards the middle for a closer view of the float being taken around with the accompaniment of traditional music. The Mariamman temple is situated on the northern side of the tank on the Kamarajar Road. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, the Chairman of Board of Trustees, Karumuttu T. Kannan, and the Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, P. Baskaran, were among those who participated.
