`Madurai Bar must attain top position'

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JAN.25. The Madurai Bar must regain its glory and fetch the top position in the State, according to Justice A.K. Rajan of the Madras High Court.

Recalling the days when he held the post of the district judge here in 1987, the judge said, "Those days, advocates here supported each and every proposition with a case law. But now, I don't find many advocates here, barring a few, are equipped enough. The Madurai Bar has to improve a lot and you must raise yourself to the level of a High Court."

The judge was delivering his acceptance speech at a farewell party bid to him by the Madras High Court Madurai Bench Advocates Association here. He retired on Monday.

Justice P.D. Dinakaran, Justice K. Ravirajapandian, Justice Prabha Sridevan, Justice S. Ashok Kumar and Justice N. Kannadasan attended the function.

Mr. Justice Rajan expressed concern over the diminishing contribution of Madras High Court to journals. He requested the Bar to abstain from boycotting courts.

Mr. Justice Dinakaran said Mr. Justice Rajan was able to open the doors of the court to the needy and the poor though he held the post for a short span of four and a half years. Mr. Justice S. Ashok Kumar described him as an asset to the judiciary. The president of MAHAA, E.N. Venkatesan, and the secretary, K. P. Thiyagarajan, said the association had resolved not to boycott courts and that they would uphold it at any cost.

Earlier, addressing a gathering at another farewell party organised by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Advocates Association Mr. Justice Rajan said, "Judiciary is a protector of democracy. If judiciary fails, democracy will also fail. Since there may be many future judges in this gathering, it is in your hands to protect the judiciary."
