Steps for random assessment tests

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JAN.25. The Directorate of Elementary Education has began a region-wise preparation for conducting State-level random assessment tests in elementary schools, according to K. Mariappan, Director of Elementary Education.

Talking to The Hindu here on Saturday, he said the concept of the assessment test to gauge the standards of students of elementary schools was under process and the announcement would be made after the region-wise discussions with the department officials were completed.

He said he had been meeting the officials, particularly the assistant education officers, to know the preparation for the test. The Directorate was conducting a simultaneous random test in all districts for Standard III and V students to know standards. The objective type test would be conducted in all subjects, Mr. Mariappan said.

Meanwhile, the District Elementary Education Officer in-charge, N. Ammayappan, said the Director of Elementary Education had held in Madurai a meeting of officials from Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.

Nearly 200 AEOs attended the review meeting besides the district chief education officers and the district elementary education officers.

According to Mr. Ammayappan, the director had enquired about the functioning of elementary schools in the seven districts and the steps required to improve them. The emphasis was on the improvement of elementary education, he said, adding that several suggestions like school cleanliness, daily prayer and mass drill for students in elementary schools were discussed.

About the State-level test, he said the assessment test was likely to be held during the first or second week of February and the review meeting dealt with the department preparation for conducting that test, which was actually planned this month-end but had to be postponed, owing to tsunami tragedy.
