Reduction of drawback rates deplored

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, JAN. 25. The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has deplored the reduction of duty drawback rates for readymade garments.

According to its chairman, A. Sakthivel, the new rates have been prescribed by "weight" as against the "per piece" rates prevailing prior to January 19. The new rates do not distinguish between various counts, finishes, trimmings and embellishments, use of lining and interlining materials and embroidery and thread work.

"The new rates do not distinguish incidence of duty due to garments which are subject to special washes such as enzyme wash where the chemical costs are very high and the actual duty suffered is almost double that of the normal garment," he said.
