Private silkworm larva rearing centre opened

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, JAN. 25. A private entrepreneur has started a silkworm larva rearing centre (chawkie) at Manupatti, near Udumalpet, which would help supply young silkworm to mulberry farmers instead of distribution of silkworm eggs.

The Department of Sericulture here that operates a grainage (started under the Japanese International Cooperation Project) will supply eggs to the centre regularly.

The Assistant Director of the Department here, I. Devasagayam, said that this would be the second private centre in Udumalpet. A similar project was planned at Periyanaikenpalayam here.

"The risk involved in rearing silkworm at an early stage is reduced for the farmers through this," he said.

Seven-day old larvae

The centre would supply seven-day old larvae to the farmers. It had latest technology and other facilities for silkworm rearing. Further, purchasing these larvae would be cheaper compared to rearing with the facilities available with them. While the average cost of the eggs was Rs. 300 for 100 DFLs (Disease Free Layings), it would be about Rs. 750 in case of larvae sold by the centre.

The capacity of the centre opened now at Udumalpet was 15,000 larvae a month. As many as 75 farmers were involved in mulberry cultivation (on totally 90 acres) in Manupatti area. About 500 farmers in Udumalpet region would benefit from this centre.

50 per cent subsidy

He explained that setting up of a centre would cost nearly Rs. 4 lakhs. A total subsidy of 50 per cent of the cost and training facilities were available from the Department and the Central Silk Board. The gains for the farmers included better cocoon yield, reduction in rearing period and cost benefits. The Department was trying to start more such centres in the district.
