BANGALORE, JAN. 25. The commercial tax officials have collected Rs. 1.45 lakh as "special entry tax" from the organisers of "Festival of Blessings," a three-day congregation that concluded here on Sunday. The tax officials had said the organisers had not paid the "special entry tax" for furniture and electrical appliances brought from the neighbouring States and used in the festival conducted by the American evangelist, Benny Hinn. On Monday, officials stopped the movement of vehicles carrying equipment from the venue at the Jakkur Airfield and insisted that the organisers pay the tax. By then nearly 300 lorries were loaded with chairs, power generators, sound systems, metal detectors and other equipment. The organisers contented that the tax could not be levied on these items as they were "used equipment." But the tax officials remained firm that the special entry tax was payable for all equipment brought from other States. A senior commercial tax official told The Hindu that the organisers paid the amount around midnight on Monday.
