BANGALORE, JAN. 25. Several computers and other equipment were destroyed in a fire in the main branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) on St. Marks Road in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to SBI officials, the fire broke out around 1.30 a.m. because of an electrical short circuit in the systems unit of the branch. The bank's security guard, who noticed the fire, informed the fire force and senior bank officials. Six fire tenders were used to extinguish the fire. About 20 computers, two servers, and two uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems were burnt, a bank official said.

Disruption in service

Service at the bank was disrupted till 11.30 a.m. The back-up data, which were not affected, helped the bank to restore its functioning quickly, said the official.

The SBI's Chief General Manager, R. Sridharan, and the General Manager, Partha Bhattacharya, supervised the restoration work.
