Bandh partial in Guntur

GUNTUR, JAN. 25. Normal life was partially affected in Guntur districton Tuesday following the bandh call given by the Telugu Desam Party. .

Monday's destruction forced the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation to withdraw all its services till evening. Trains were stopped at nine places on the Guntur Railway Division. The TDP leaders took out rally from the NTR Statue near the BR Stadium and submitted memoranda to the district collector, and the Inspector General of Police.

No one was injured nor was any damage to property reported from any town in the district. The shops and establishments voluntarily closed shutters, and TDP workers forcibly closed even the odd shop that remained open. The TDP district unit president, Makineni Pedarattaiah, led the rally and had a tiff with the IG, T. Krishna Raju, when the police tried to stop them for not obtaining permission.

The RTC Guntur Regional Manager, G. Jaya Rao, said that 67 services were started in the evening. The total number of buses burnt in the district on Monday rose to six. Fifty-two others were damaged, he said and added that the corporation suffered loss was Rs. 50 lakhs in the district.

The Guntur Railway Divisional Manager, P.N. Shukla, said but trains got delayed by 15 minutes due to token protest by the TDP workers at Tenali, Vemuru, Sattenapalli, Repalle, Narsaraopet, Pedakurapadu in the district and Nalgonda. The trains bound for Chennai and some passengers were running more than one and a half hours behind schedule last night, but the delays were only nominal, he added.

The TDP former ministers, Sennakayala Aruna, Alapati Rajendra Prasad, vociferously condemned the killing and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident at a press conference in the afternoon. They demanded immediate resignation of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The police should arrest the killers of Paritala Ravi instead of filing cases against the TDP activists for causing damage to public property, said Ms. Aruna. The APCC Secretary, L. Appi Reddy, condemned the killing and said no Congress party leaders were involved in it.
