HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. Normal life was paralysed in the city and suburbs on Tuesday following the bandh called by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) against the killing of its party MLA, Paritala Ravindra. The bandh was total. Barring sporadic incidents and preventive arrests, it passed off peacefully. It had, however, no impact in the Old City. With the State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) suspending services till 4 p.m., office goers had a tough time. Except Government offices that witnessed thin attendance, shops, business establishments, banks, ATM centres and petrol bunks downed their shutters till evening. Patients and their attendants going to hospitals were the worst sufferers with auto-rickshaws and seven-seaters becoming the only mode of transport.
Preventive custody
Some 472 persons, including the Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, and the Secunderabad Cantonment MLA, Sayanna, were taken into preventive custody for allegedly attempting to enforce bandh at Abids. The BJP city president, Venkataramani, and the former MLA, Laxman, along with other party activists, were also rounded up at Kothi. TDP activists picked up an argument with the police at Sanjeevareddy Nagar when police arrested them. The Cyberabad police took into custody some 780 persons under Section 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Demonstrators were caned while blocking the traffic at Kukatpally. Two youngsters were rounded up on charge of breaking glasses of the Padmaja Polymers at the Cherlapally Industrial area. Activists of the Telugu Yuvatha stopped the Bollaram-Secunderabad local at the Tukaramgate area for a couple of hours.
