NEW DELHI, JAN. 26. At least two civilians were killed and three were injured in an operation by the Army in Nalbari district of Assam in the early hours today. The operation took place at Solbari village, an island on the Brahmaputra river, about 25 km west of Guwahati. The village comprises mainly Bangladeshi immigrants, an official release said here. While the Army personnel were recovering weapons, the villagers surrounded them and opened fire using country made weapons. The Army personnel fired in self-defence. The operation, launched by a highly decorated Army unit, was based on specific information, the press release said. It added that an FIR had been lodged at the Sualkuchi police station about the incident. Our Guwahati Special Correspondent writes: Police said that two persons died and eight others were injured when a group of Army personnel opened fire after the residents of Gaoburapam village attacked them, mistaking them to be dacoits.
