`Democracy safe in any nation that respects dissent'
By Our Staff Reporter
JAMMU,
JAN. 26.
Democracy is safe in any country which respects dissent, says Balraj Puri (76), columnist, who has been awarded the Padma Bhushan this year.
Talking to The Hindu here, Mr. Puri said: "I have been a perpetual dissenter on the country's Kashmir policy. On critical occasions, I stood almost alone in the country like during the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah in 1953 and human rights violations in the early 1990s. Immediately after 1947, I wanted Indian democracy to be extended to Kashmir also, which brought me into conflict with the state establishment. The appreciation of Nehru for my dissenting views on Kashmir built up my initial self-confidence."
