PUNE, JAN. 26. The Maharashtra Government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the Mandradevi temple stampede tragedy. The Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, said in Mumbai that the probe by a retired judge of the High Court would establish the cause. The district authorities today insisted that the earlier fears of the death toll being 350 to 400 were unfounded and the number of dead was only 257. According to the Satara District Collector, Subharao Patil, 256 bodies were received in hospitals in Satara and Wai, while one person died in Pune. He said in Wai that the dead included 156 women and 14 children.
