By Our Staff Correspondent
CHITRADURGA, JAN. 26. Some persons who claimed to be followers of N.Y. Hanumanthappa, Congress MP for Chitradurga, barged into the office-cum-residence of the Staff Correspondent of The Hindu here on Wednesday afternoon and assaulted him for "asking the MP uncomfortable questions" at a press conference. Around 10 persons entered the compound of the newspaper's office around 3 p.m. and two of them entered the office of the correspondent and started assaulting him. There was a minor scuffle that alarmed the correspondent's family. Neighbours rushed to his rescue and sent the intruders out.Six to eight persons, who were waiting outside the house, beat a hasty retreat when neighbours came out of their houses. The matter was reported to the police and a complaint registered. Earlier, Mr. Hanumanthappa, a former Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, entered into an argument with journalists at a press conference held by the district in-charge Minister, D. Manjunath, after the Republic Day function. He took strong objection to a report that was published in a Kannada daily a week ago. The journalists objected to his remarks and suggested that he take up the issue in the appropriate forum. But the MP became angry. He asked his secretary to call "his people" and said he knew how to handle journalists who ask uncomfortable questions.
